Now that the Cayman can actually be touched (though we've got a few more weeks before they can be driven) what do you think?

I admit it. I would have bought a Cayman but the SO wanted a convertible. The sacrifices we have to make. Sheesh.

How am I supposed to react? Jerremy Clarkston ala Top Gear coldly blasts Porche for not making the Cayman as good as it could have been. Whats this you say? Its new technology, mid engine coupe, better handling and all that! Well guess what top Porche leadership decided to do? After early reports that the Cayman bested the 911 around Nurburgring by a whopping four seconds, they retracted and said it was a mistake, someone misspoke or something like that. What really happened was that the Cayman with limited slip differential did indeed best the 911 with the limited slip differential, so they decided to eliminate the limited slip diff from the production model of the Cayman. We still have to sell 911's don't you know. Can't have the Cayman out of place. Like Jerremy said, Porche perfectly placed the Cayman in performance numbers and horsepower square in between the boxster and the 911. No coincidence states Clarkston. Could have been great and now its just a big marketing ploy for the unsuspecting.
God! I had great expectations. You see Porche has every intention of eliminating old rear engine technology, they just haven't yet come to terms on when this will will happen when they are still selling the old stuff.

I think the Cayman is a great car and I sure would love to drive one for an afternoon, but by placing it in between the Boxster and 911, makes it so I would choose either of those before the Cayman. In other words, if I wanted a convertible, the extra hp and handling of the Cayman wouldn't sway me away from a Boxster, and if I wanted a coupe, I would spring for the 911.

If I had the $$ I would have jumped in a Cayman as soon as it hit US soil!

I have driven a 911 and am not a big fan of the rear engine format.

What drew me to the Boxster was the mid-engine design. What kept me in the Boxster was that it did everything great (as you all well know)!!

I am not by any means a conv't fan. In fact, I bought the Boxster in spite of, not because of the conv't top (although since I put the top down every chance I get my wife thinks I have converted ;) ) If I could get everything that is a Boxster in a coupe, I would do flips!!! Enter the Cayman.

When the time is right (a.k.a. have enough $$ AND convinced the wife to let me get a new car) I will be purchasing a Cayman!

Gosh I hope I didn't sound too harsh as I will purchase a Cayman one day, just not this year. I think I am influenced by my friend telling me "never by the first of anything"

I can not part with my Boxster, too many fond memories. If Iam going to drop money for a Cayman, they why not just pay the difference for a 997 Carrera,or get a used 996 with low miles?

Maybe when I get oldder and, don't want the wind in my hair for fear that what is left of it may blow-out! Then I'll consider a Caymen or a non-cab Carrera of some sort.

Since I bought my 987 less than four months ago, I'm not thinking about trading over now. As for further in the future, I can't see wanting to prioritize power and handling over the ragtop while I'm based in California.

Further, though it may be based on the Boxster the Cayman is a new model and is still unproven. More importantly, perhaps, is that it has yet to be refined by Porsche, as they did with the Boxster over the course of years.

So if I put it all together, the only reason I would end up in the position to get a Cayman within the next few years would be if my Boxster turned out to be a dud. But in that case I would not be shopping for another Porsche. ;)

I agree with Rayman. When I get older and my hair gets thinner then most likely will move to the Carrera, but for now, conv. for me.

To me honest, I am still looking to buy the Boxster, but I have the year, style and features I am looking for. It is just a matter of finding it.
