You new owners are lucky. You have a warranty and do not need a smog inspection. My registration renewal notice said I needed a smog inspection, since I'm in the 5th model year. It is due in 18 days.

Should I go to Tom at the local gas station, who has smogged my other cars for years, or Anderson? Called Anderson. Next date for a smog inspection is at the end of April.

Went to Tom and asked him if he was up to a challenge. He was. Inspections on OBD II cars are easy. No more timing lights. A sensor is held near the engine or a metal ground. But the probe is still stuck up the pipe.

There was a little problem with the sensor reading the rpm on my car. But you know what, rpm is rpm as far as the smog computer knows. So you improvise.

So it all went well. I passed my smog inspection at the local gas station. Like one of the guys at the station said; fuel, spark, compression. It is just another internal combustion engine.

Most modern cars run so clean that unless you've removed the cats, it's almost certain that you'd pass smog. That is until CA decides to make the passing limit even lower.

I wonder what happens if one runs race gas... :)

And the test thing to make sure you did not punch out the flap for unleaded gas, or the pressure test on the gas cap seal. Sill required. Had to show Tom how to get to the gas cap so that he could test the seal on his machine. Mine is the new black seal.
