View Full Version : Wrench OR Drive this Sat (07/12)
Folks, need your help with this one. What do you think about a get together this weekend, specifically, Saturday the 12th? Here are the options :
1) Go for an early drive, then finish it off with a brunch/lunch/picnic-lunch. We'll need to pick the drive (while avoiding the smoke-filled areas). Mt. Hamilton comes to mind.
2) Wrench at Efren(cas951)'s place. Efren needs to do his belts, and check a leak from the right side spark plugs/o-ring (he still has to order parts though). I'm sure between all of us we can find other work items as well :D
Based on who can make it (and to which of the two above), we can decide on which option to take. Please also try to indicate if there is a specific drive you'd prefer (for option 1) or if you'd like to do any work on your car (option 2).
are you or will you be here in the Bay Area this Sat?
I see you signed up for the Sat drive/poll.
Good eyes Dede (as always, I might add)! Are you going to be able to make it this Sat?

I am still working on whether or not I would attend, since we just back from Tahoe. I haven't even detailed/washed my car yet from the vacation. I will let you know asap.
BTW, I think you might find Mt. Ham a bit on the "Hot" side. I was up there about a month ago and down the backside into Livermore area. At that time of the year it was very hot with the top down. Maybe a drive up Skyline to Half Moon Bay for lunch might be a consideration. I would say the ocean would be a natural air conditioner. Or some winery's in the Los Gatos mountains. Just my 2 cents. :)
Great suggestions Dede! I know Voxster will definitely like the Los Gatos wineries idea :)
Skyline-84W-1N-Half-moon bay should be a nice drive as well.
Excellent question Efren :D It does look like everyone (well, almost everyone) is itching for a drive.
So, once we figure out the specific drive, then we can determine the venue. Tentatively, we could meet by Santana Row at, say, 9am, take in some of the exotics they have there, and leave at around 10am for the drive.
For the drive itself, I liked Dede's idea of the Half Moon Bay drive (hwy9-skyline-84-1north-half moon bay). Anyone else has any preferences/recommendations?

You might go to Half Moon Bay Brewery (http://www.hmbbrewingco.com/) for lunch in Princeton by the Sea/Marina or go south to Davenport at the Roadhouse (http://www.davenportroadhouse.com/) or Durate's Tavern in Pescadero (http://www.duartestavern.com/).
Moss Beach Distillery (http://www.mossbeachdistillery.com) is another option.
BigB I will PM you some driving destinations/suggestions I have on my blog. :)
Another great place in Half Moon Bay is Sam's Chowder House (http://www.samschowderhouse.com/photo-gallery/restaurant/index.html) (right before Princeton By The Sea) under new management for about year now, great food and has a back deck eating area to view the ocean.

P.S. Last time Trent and I drove Mt. Hamilton last summer, it WAS bloody hot, but more than that, we turned back because the road was so rough. Not sure if they've repaved it since, but that's a consideration for me EVER driving it until they get the road surface fixed.
Kev & I are considering going on Saturday. Maybe the first meeting place would be Santana Row in San Jose (map) (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=6394384299439365232,37.333940,-122.064280%3B7415556501223692904,37.306820,-122.074530%3B9349606748570749175,37.251040,-122.064710%3B6621375311810150987,37.375810,-122.260750&saddr=Santana+row,+san+jose&daddr=I-280+N+%4037.333940,+-122.064280+to:Stevens+Canyon+Rd+%4037.306820,+-122.074530+to:Big+Basin+Way%2FCongress+Springs+Rd+ %4037.251040,+-122.064710+to:37.43016,-122.315598&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=4&sz=11&via=1,2,3&sll=37.411073,-122.303238&sspn=0.233431,0.278778&ie=UTF8&ll=37.395255,-122.282639&spn=0.233481,0.278778&z=11)and the next meeting point to pick up any Northern Peninsula folks would be at Alice's Restaurant on Skyline or Page Mill Road/280 exit (that's if you go straight up I-280 from Santana). I was on Page Mill Road about a month ago, great paved twisty road. Just a suggestion.
So, the "Drive" is the big winner - taking 3/4th of the vote (including Gerry's "in spirit" one :D ).
1st Meeting Point: Santana Row at 9am. Departing at 9.30am. Route: 280-Page Mill Rd-35 to Alice's; OR, 9-35. Decide at the venue.
2nd Meeting Point: Alice's Restaurant on Skyline at 10.30am. Departing at 10.45am. Route: 84-1N.
Lunch Venue: Sam's Chowder House (4210 North Cabrillo Highway, Half Moon Bay. 650.712.0245). Arriving at 11.30am, just beating the lunch rush ;)

you can take Stage Coach Road (http://trazzler.com/trips/coastal-overlooks-the-san-mateo-coast-california) going north then go north on Hwy 1 to Sam's Chowder House or whatever you choose.
looks like 3 people have signed up for "work on your car" on Saturday.
they could have their own group :D too!

Carol and I will meet you at Alices. Actually it will be easier to gather across the street at the larger parking lot. It won't take long to reach the lunch destination because you will be on Hiway 1 all the way. Some alternate roads are 84 to Stage Rd at San Gregario, Hiway 1 to Tunitas Creek to Verde to Purisima to Half Moon Bay to lunch wherever. You need a different map. Just an idea.

Excellent news George (and Carol)! I think a couple of people have suggested Stage Rd, so lets do it :D
If I understood your comments and the map correctly, from Alice's, we take 84 to Stage Rd to Pescadero Creek Rd to Hwy 1North to lunch venue. Does that sound about right?
If needed, we can also fine-tune the route when we meet up at the parking lot around Alice's.

We go north on Stage Rd from San Gregorio not south. A San Francisco Bay Region map from AAA will show the small roads that I mentioned.

I'm thinking we meet by the back parking lot in Santana Row (the open one, not the multi-floor ones). Basically, same location as where they bring the exotics every Sat morning (shouldn't be hard to spot in a drive around).

Voxster.... Keep the Jet Black as a base color and add White on the tips. Maybe about an inch or two all over. Not Grey, I'm not crazy about Grey, kinda drab. Red does wash out but I think you need to go lighter on the ends of your hair. Maybe you've done that before? ;)

Just a minor distraction from the hot-topic-of-the-day, Voxster's Hair Color :D
I called up Sam's to ask about a reservation, and while they don't take reservations for a party our size (15-20) for the outdoor patio, they will try to get us the best seats possible and have put us down for 11.45am tomorrow, in the name of 'Porsche Boxsters'.
Now, if we are to get good seats all together (or close enough), we should plan on getting there early rather than late (I really don't think I should be saying this - my track record on punctuality is nothing to write home about). On nice days, they start filling up around noon, so let us definitely plan on getting there at 11.45, or maybe even a little bit earlier.
Ok, now back to discussing Voxster's hair - dude, I've heard that ocean wind really helps set in hair color.

P.S> This is my 100th post... I'm having a Senior moment!
Thanks Dede. Asking for a reservation for over 20 would've meant going through their event coordinator(!), and with 9 signups here, few of them solo, 20 sounded like a reasonable number. If there are more, I'm sure we'll be able to find enough seats so long as we get there early enough. The seats may not be all together (their outside patio isn't all that big to begin with), but oh well.

My route might take longer than an hour. It's up to you how we get to lunch or what time but there are some great scenic views along the way and you might not want to rush. Or we could forget the views and make it a speed run. :D But it might not be recommended considering the roads.
